Zumba® & MORE with Rita in Virginia Beach!
Volunteerism - Giving Back
Thanks to her extraordinary performing and easy-to-follow teaching skills, Rita is in high demand all over Tidewater and the Peninsula as a Zumba® instructor. In addition to her own studio and beach classes, Rita is constantly asked to teach for master classes, conferences, retreats, parties, and other events. Rita also uses her talents to give back to the community, having taught classes for Norfolk’s Club Brickhouse (FIT for Life); and helping to raise funds for the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. In the past 6 years, she has organized Zumbathon® charity events that have raised over $22,000 combined for Making strides Against Breast Cancer Hampton Roads of the American Cancer Society; the Tidewater Susan G. Komen Affiliate; Susan G. Komen for the Cure® National Affiliate; Tidewater Autism Society; and F.A.C.T (Families Of Autistic Children of Tidewater), and End 22. In addition to teaching her classes, Rita has also been a performIng artist with Young Audiences, VA, taking Zumba® Kids to children in some Portsmouth and Newport News City Elementary schools for the Dance for Life after school program.
Though she resides in Virginia Beach with her husband and their two children, Rita is a native of Accra, Ghana, in West Africa. So, her classes also incorporate some fun African rhythms (from Azonto to Zouk). Rita is not only a licensed Zumba® instructor, but she is also AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) group fitness certified and is therefore always current with what is happening in the fitness world. Not only are her classes fun, but they are also safe and effective!
Rita Cohen is a member in good standing of the Zumba® Instructor Network (ZIN™; check out herprofile) and was selected by the Zumba® Home Office and trained as a Zumba® Jammer, a unique licensure that allows her to travel and teach choreography to other ZIN™ members. She knows first hand all the physical, mental, and emotional benefits from moving the body purposefully since beginning to take Zumba® classes in 2008, and is looking forward to helping even more people lead healthy and fit lives!
Rita has been dancing and performing all her life. A Norfolk Academy graduate with two music degrees (B.A. from the University of Virginia and M.M. in Classical Voice Performance from the Manhattan School of Music); a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do; several years of dance instruction (Ballet, Jazz, Ballroom, Belly Dance); a professional 15-year performing career; and a mastery of 10 languages - including Spanish, Rita's classes are truly unique. Not only are you always greeted with a warm and infectious smile, but you also get serenaded while dancing, sometimes with a simultaneous English translation of a song! You leave refreshed and inspired, forgetting that you just sweated and burned hundreds of calories (600 on average), eagerly anticipating Rita's next Zumba® party. A native of Ghana, Rita has also developed her own African dance series, I <3 Afrobeats!, which she also offers in a 2 hour workshop format.
Currently licensed to teach Level 1 & 2 Zumba®; Zumba Toning®; Zumba Gold®; Zumba® Step; and Zumba® Kids, STRONG by Zumba®, and Piloxing®, Rita’s classes focus on four basic Latin rhythms (Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, Reggaeton), in addition to Belly Dancing, Flamenco, Samba, and Tango; and cater to all Zumba® and fitness levels. As a licensed Zumba® Toning instructor, she also offers classes that incorporate muscle training by using lightweight toning sticks/dumbbells. She is excited to be adding the HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) format STRONG by Zumba® to her class schedule in 2018, as well as offering nutritional counseling as a licensed Fitness Nutrition Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).
